Where everyone is an athlete…

Strength & Conditioning… Making you a better driver

Yeah you did read that correctly

I was at a wicked presentation last week at the NSCA NatCon New Orleans

This presentation by Dr Lara Calrson and the legendary Dr Bill Kraemer looked into motorsport athlete performance

It’s pretty amazing how much physical training is required by someone to drive a car round a track

But if you think about it…

The driver is the brain of the car

Without a driver the car doesn’t move!!!

After all, doesn’t this definition of an athlete from the American Heritage Dictionary apply to a racing car driver as much as it does to a rugby player?

“a person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.”

There is so much more to driving a car than you think and believe it or not a lot of the research into motorsport does apply to you and your daily commute too

First of all are you in the physical shape to cope with demands of driving?

  • Achy legs from holding the clutch or using the pedals?
  • Sore back from sitting down for long periods of time?
  • Sore neck from checking the blind spots (like you should do)?

Does your body have the strength to cope with the forces put on it?

  • Can you still hold the steering wheel when going round sharpe bends?
  • Can you stay stable in your seat when driving fast?
  • Are you able to push the pedals hard when you need to?

Are you able to cope with the physiological stress from driving?

  • Does your body thermoregulate efficiently to cope with the conditions inside the car?
  • Does your body cope with the increases in heart rate and stress hormones during road rage?!?!
  • Are you able to function safely in terms of decision making, concentration and reactions to potential dangers?

Can you see the picture now?

The better shape you’re in physically, the safer you’ll be

Because there are some right plonkers on the roads these days!

If you want to know what sort of exercises you should be doing, give me a shout
