Where everyone is an athlete…

Cannons & Canoes… and Stability Training

Paul Chek once famously said…

“You can’t fire a cannon from a canoe”

This has been quoted hundreds of times since when talking about training and performance

But… What does it mean?

Well… Firstly (and pretty obviously) if you fired a cannon from a canoe…

The canoe would capsize and the cannonball probably wouldn’t go very far

This is because there isn’t much stability for the cannon to fire on

(Take into account Newton’s Third Law of Motion…)

“For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction”

This means the more stable the surface…

The stronger the base of support is…

Therefore, the greater potential there is for performance (Happy Days!)

Apply this theory to humans performing a task such as throwing a javelin…

The more stability they have in their lower body…

The more efficiently they’ll be able to engage the force they express into the ground…

Which results in a further throw (obviously technique, weather and ability depending!)

So the question you want to ask me now is…

“How do we train to become more stable?”

Well… Quite simply…

You perform exercises and movements that use the stabilising muscles to stabilise

Like this…

Progressing to this…

And this…

Please note…

These are STABILITY exercises because we are controlling the body against another movement

BALANCE exercises generally only focus on controlling the body against gravity

Until next time,
