As a strength & conditioning coach a majority of my clients goals are based on enhancing an attribute of their sports performance. This can include to improving acceleration for a team sports athlete for getting away from opponents or improving leg strength for the development of kicking power in a kick boxer. However, I don’t always work with athletes. In fact, a large percentage of my clients don’t compete in any sports at all. They just see me.
For this type of client, it would be a common misconception to assume that I train them differently to an athlete I might be working with. However, if you were to watch me take a young national level tennis player through a session followed by a middle-aged office worker, you may beg to differ.
You may see me teaching derivatives of Olympic lifts with my tennis player for developing hip hinge power or coaching them through a plyometric session to develop neuromuscular efficiency. Both very high-intensity, high energy expenditure activities. You may then see me simply getting my office worker to stretch using a PVC pipe to perform dynamic stretches or perform multi-planar movements on one leg using a Tri-stretch for stability. These both being fairly low-intensity, low energy expenditure activities. But, to me I’m train them both the same way, my way.
When I work with a client, be them an international athlete, a pre-pubescent school child, a wheelchair user with a neurological condition or a post-operative elderly grandparent, I still follow my same coaching philosophy. This being MOVEMENT IS THE KEY. Needless to say, my clients, or as I refer to everyone as, my “athlete” will have their own goals. These can range from being purely aesthetic, such as weight loss for their wedding day, to being physiological, such as being able to get a better Bleep Test score. Nevertheless, I will work to help them achieve their goal in a way that will satisfy my goal of “cleaning-up” their movement patterns.

The reason we believe in this mantra is because it builds longevity in our athletes. Not only does it allow them to reach their goals. It also allows them to exceed them. It allows them to train without the pain. It allows them to gain without the pain. It allows them to to build upon a strong and solid foundation.
Humans were made to move, and that is why I believe movement training is the key.
